Liberty Molly - Poecilia Salvatoris: Facts and Information

Poecilia salvatoris, commonly known as liberty molly, is an interesting and colorful species for the aquarium hobby. Its geographical origin is El Salvador. Generally, the diet of this species is defined as both carnivorous and herbivorous, and they prefer dried live food. These feeding habits enable them to grow healthily and maintain their color.
Liberty mollies generally exhibit peaceful behavior, but small fights between males can be observed from time to time. Their swimming levels range from medium to superficial and they can live harmoniously with other species in the aquarium. Females are generally larger than males, and while males have a special structure called gonopod, females do not have this feature.
Reproduction occurs by live birth and the offspring are raised by hiding among plants such as Ceratophyllum. While it is known that this species reaches a maximum size of 10 cm in the aquarium, they require an aquarium volume of at least 100 liters to live healthily under suitable conditions. Water hardness should be between 10-15 °dH and pH level should be between 7.0-7.5. The liberty molly species, which is considered to be of medium difficulty in care, is an enjoyable option for aquarium hobbyists. Aquariums with a balanced balance of males and females will provide a habitat suitable for the natural behavior of the species.
